 Bird Cage Size Guide

Bird Cage General Size Guide

Bird experts agree you should select as large a bird cage as you can afford, keeping in mind the bar spacing that is appropriate for the size of your bird.

It is important to remember that the bird's tail should not touch the back or bottom of the cage when its sitting on a perch.  At the very minimum the width of the cage should be 1-1/2 times as wide as your bird's wingspan.  When selecting your bird cages keep in mind that essential perches, toys and other fun bird-safe accessories quickly fill a cage.  So you'll do your feathered friend a favor by providing him a comfortably large living area that will accommodate all the essential items that make his house an enjoyable "home" in which to spend his time.

A general bird cage size guide for some common pet birds is shown below.  I've offered this guide as  an approximate size reference.  My personal choice would be to select the largest cage I could afford as long as the cage bar dimensions were appropriate for the bird.

Species Cage Size *(see below) Bar Spacing
Finches 30"wide x 18"deep x 18"high 1/4" to 1/2"
Canaries 24"wide x 18"deep x 18"high 1/4" to 1/2"
Budgies 18' wide x 18"deep x 24"high 1/2"
Cockatiels 20"wide x 20"deep x 24"high 1/2" to 5/8"

Amazons
Mini Macaws
Small Cockatoos - Goffin's, Lesser Sulphur-crested
African Greys
Eclectus

36"wide x 24"deep x 48"high 3/4" to 1"
Large Cockatoos 48"wide x 36"deep x 48"high 1" to 1.5"
Large Macaws 48"wide x 36"deep x 60"high 1" to 1.5"

       * Cage Size dimensions refer to the living area of the cage, as follows:
Wide refers to the distance from side to side
Deep refers to the distance from front to back
High refers to the distance from top to bottom
Manufacturers may offer additional measurements as interior dimensions and overall height.
Seed guards/mess catchers attach to the outside of the cage and can add approximately 3" to 6" of
additional width on the front, back and each side.  The dimensions of seed guards are appropriate to
             the size of the cage.
