Have a Question?
 Emergency First Aid

Be Prepared!

If your bird has an emergency ... such as, an injury or poisoning your veterinarian may recommend emergency first aid before you transport your pet to the medical clinic.  You'll be safe rather than sorry, to have the following list of items in your emergency first aid kit so they are available if your vet instructs an emergency procedure:

AVIAN FIRST AID SUPPLIES

Travel Carrier - Be sure to have a Travel Carrier in the appropriate size for your bird.  Travel carriers are necessary for transporting your bird safely to a veterinarian's office.  Many offices do not allow pets to be brought inside the clinic unless they are contained.  This is for the patient's protection as well as other pets that may be visiting the clinic.  Travel carriers are also essential to have on hand in case of fire, earthquake or floods.  They are also ideal for recreational traveling.

First Aid Kit It is recommended to keep the following items on hand that may prove essential in an emergency.  You might rather choose to purchase the "First Aid Kit for Birds" which contains a basic selection of supplies to assist in a medical emergency.

  • Cotton swabs
  • Alcohol swabs
  • 1" gauze tape
  • Vet wrap
  • Penlight
  • Metal nail file
  • Hemostats or Tweezers
  • Small scissors
  • Clean towels
  • 1cc syringes
  • Flexible tubing
  • 12cc curved tip syringes
  • Net for catching birds (in the event your bird is not tame or easily handled)
  • Sterile saline solution
  • Pedialyte
  • Betadine
  • Clotisol (blood stopper)
  • Neosporin ointment
  • Pepto-Bismol
  • Benadryl (pink kapseals)
