The Flight/Aviary style bird cages are designated as such because of the gauge wire and bar spacing from 1/2" to 5/8" which is considered appropriate for small birds depending on their size and species (Bird Cage Size Guide).  Flight cages are used to provide room for small birds to exercise when interior space is arranged so the space can be utilized to the max ... that is, allowing small flighted birds to fly back and forth.
